Are you a when/then kind of person when it comes to your Lap Band journey
I don't know about you but sometimes I feel like I am completely living in the future. Lately I have found myself saying 'when' I lose weight, 'then' I'm going to be able to wear these clothes, 'when' I lose weight, 'then' I will be able to go out more, 'when' I am maintaining my weight, 'then' my life will be so much better!!

I am not as bad as I used to be in the when/then stakes but sometimes it still comes up as an issue for me. I have also found that this has almost without exception been an issue with all of my clients who have a challenge with their weight. However, this is not only a challenge that is significant to those of us who battle with their weight. Some of our fit and slim friends also have this when/then thinking to parts of their life - sometimes you might have heard people saying:

* When I win Powerball, then my life will be great

* When I meet my soul mate, then my life will be complete

* When I fix how I look, then I will attract the partner of my dreams

So what is wrong with thinking about the future? Well nothing really unless you put your current life on hold until you get your when/then thing sorted, but then that makes the present less than it can be!! One of the main problems with when/then thinking could be that you are hiding a more profound issue. When I was single and overweight, I used to think - when I'm thin, then I will attract the partner of my dreams. The problem with this was that despite the fact that I was a fun, interesting, successful person, I didn't think that anyone would like me because I was overweight.

So, what do you think happened then? I lost weight and discovered that I still didn't think that people would like me and that was when I realised that there were some underlying issues that cosmetic changes to the outside of me could not fix. Interestingly enough, I did meet the man of my dreams and he is wonderful and completely loving though one of the things that I have discovered is that I still have times where I think 'Does he really like me?' This has been a bit of an underlying challenge for me and one that I continue to peel back the layers on. I think it's imperative to keep looking at the issues going on so I don't go back to that whole merry go round of 'when/then' and then feeling disappointed about the here and now and then turning to food to make me feel better. Now, the important thing for me is 'what can I do to make my now great?'

Here are some questions for you to consider while on your Lap Band journey:

* How do you when/then?

* What is the underlying issue?

* Think about what you can do to make the here and now more enjoyable and exceptional?

When things get tough, when nothing is going your way, what will you focus on? As the famous Chinese expression says, 'the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step'. If you are constantly striving towards what is important to you whilst on your Lap Band journey, you will achieve it!
English is the foremost spoken language in the whole world. That's why it is absolutely crucial for you to know how to develop good writing skills in English. Unfortunately, not everything can be learned from the classroom. A little extra help can go a long way.

Here are some ways on how to develop good writing skills in English.

1) Read Books.

If you're an avid reader, then this should not be a problem for you. Reading books helps you get a better grasp of the English language. You're able to see how people use certain words or construct sentences apart from the examples on your language handout or references. Plus, you'll also gain more confidence in your own writing style.

If you're not a fan of books, you can always read short stories or feature articles online. Even some magazines will help you develop good writing skills in English.

2) Start Writing.

If you want to develop good writing skills in English, you're going to have to write something at some point. A lot of people who keep journals are able to practice their English very well. I suggest you do the same as well.

If you prefer typing to actual writing, that's not a problem either. Your writing skills will not be impeded by whatever method you choose to use. Writing in a notebook will not necessarily make you a better writer than typing on your computer. However, stick to the one you're more comfortable with.

If you don't want to write a diary, try writing essays. In my case, I often enjoy writing "what if" essays. Ask yourself a "what if" question and answer it in essay form. This way, you won't run out of ideas and tire of the exercise immediately.

3) Put Your Work Out There.

Part of the ways on how to develop good writing skills in English is feedback. How else would you know how good or bad your work is unless you show it to others? A lot of people fear this stage because they don't really want to hear others criticize their work.

However, that is part and parcel of the whole process. It's like the story of "The Emperor's New Clothes." Do you really want to live the rest of your life wearing no clothes just because you can't handle a little honesty?

It's natural to be a little apprehensive about showing your work to others, which is why I suggest you only show it to those people who you really trust. They will give you the honest feedback you need without mocking you for your efforts.

Even successful authors need to keep learning how to develop good writing skills in English. You can't remain stagnant just because you're too lazy to read or write or too afraid to hear what other people think. You have a lot more potential than you realize.

On Becoming Fearless: How to Remove Obstacles to Personal Growth
Do you know how to calculate the amount of fear holding you back in life? Take a pen and a piece of paper. On top of the page, write down your current age, for instance "34 years old." At the bottom, indicate how old you intend to grow before you die. "Death at 80" is a reasonable target.

Now comes the mathematical part of the exercise. Draw a straight line connecting your current age with your death. That line represents the number of days that you have left on earth. In our example, the difference between 80 and 34 leaves you with 46 years, that is, almost 17.000 days.

The vertical line on the page divides your future in two areas. The last part of the game consists of deciding how you are going to use those 17.000 days. On the left side of the line, you can write down safe and commonplace goals. On the right side, difficult and disruptive ambitions.

Boring projects are easy to name and quantify. They include, amongst others, looking for better jobs (600 days), cleaning the house (600 days), and going on holidays (1000 days). The rules of the exercise allow you to list as many activities as you wish, provided that you don't run out of time to live.

On your left-side list, you should not forget mundane tasks such as working five days a week (5400 days), washing your car once per month (500 hours), getting a divorce (150 days) and shopping for new clothes (250 days). When your remaining term of 46 years is up, you are dead.

You only need to worry about the opposite side of the line if you have unused time, which is unlikely. The truth is that most people will allocate their complete lifespan to left-side tasks, including essential activities such as watching television (4000 days) and walking their dog (1000 days).

What about the right side of the line? Does anyone actually write down adventurous, risky goals? Are there people foolish enough to risk total failure in order to pursue their dreams? Is it not better to stick to attainable objectives? This is the type of activities that usually come up under the label "difficult and disruptive:"

1. Live in Paris for a year (500 days, including preparation and removals)

2. Start up and grow a global business (3000 days)

3. Write twenty great books (3000 days)

4. Save and invest until you are able to live from dividends (6000 days)

5. Learn to cook according to good nutrition principles (300 days)

6. Lose weight and acquire habits that allow you to stay in good shape (500 days)

One could argue that this game is useless, since it has no winner and no loser. Since the same individual appears on both sides of the line, what is the point? What is the purpose of the exercise? The answer is that, paradoxically, the subjects on each side of the line are different persons.

One of them is boring, the other fearless. One of them is aimless, the other determined. One of them is predictable, the other exciting. The lesson is that, one day, the 46 years will be consumed all the same. At the end, results will be trivial or spectacular, meaningless or irreplaceable.

If you don't like the outcome of your calculations, take a blank piece of paper, draw a new vertical line, and start the exercise again. After a few times, you will get quite good at it. At one point, you will begin to fear boring activities more than risky ones. If you are already there, congratulations, now you know how to win the game.
